The angst of a failed interview with the company you’ve always dreamed of working with is nothing like the hopelessness of thinking it may be your last shot with them. Luckily, this type of negative thinking is far from the truth. You may actually still be an ideal candidate for that company, just not that particular fresh grad job.
Apply to More Than One Position
If you really had your heart set on that company, then thank the interviewer for their time and ask them to keep you in mind for other positions after a rejection. In this way, you convert the rejection into a potential stepping stone for another opportunity that might be a better match. When that new entry level job comes up, don’t be afraid to bid on it.
What if I really blew the first interview?
Everyone has bad days and you might not even be interviewing with the same hiring managers. The fact that you did so poorly in the first interview may end up being an advantage, if you’ve learned how to avoid those mistakes when you re-apply. If you can come back with additional work experience, since the last time you interviewed, by doing an internship, your perseverance can actually work in your favor.
One Company, Many Branches
If you just didn’t get along with the interviewer, try a different branch of the same company. Large companies make it easy to get hired even with one failed attempt on your record. No one is going to hold it against you as the decision to hire is really impersonal. It’s all about meeting the business needs and sometimes, they won’t even remember you were there once before.
